Winning the lottery is a dream that many people share, but it’s not always an entirely positive experience, especially when the reality of sharing the jackpot sets in. There is often an expectation to share lottery winnings with friends and family, but that’s not something everyone feels comfortable doing. For many people, keeping lottery winnings a secret is vital and trusting others to do the same isn’t easy. After all, there is no guarantee that they will keep things down low’ and draw no attention to their newfound wealth.
In this blog, Go Gambling has looked at a recent lottery winner’s predicament and the problems that arise when a couple doesn’t share the same views on how the money should be split. With nearly 3,000 comments, people had much to say about this woman’s Reddit post.
Background Story
After a significant lottery win that was well into the millions, a woman took to the Am I The A-hole Subreddit to ask others, AITA, for not wanting to split my jackpot win with my husband's friend.
A 30-year-old woman based in the US explained that she entered the lottery for the first time last year amidst the buzz surrounding the Powerball Jackpot. She further explained that she started off by playing casually, spending only a few dollars weekly on the game, and never anticipated winning big. However, she found solace in the dreams the lottery provided during a challenging financial struggle and debt.
But, several months ago and despite a seemingly casual approach to the lottery, the woman discovered that her ticket perfectly matched the winning numbers. Overwhelmed by the magnitude of the prize, which she describes as being life-changing, she and her 35-year-old husband, Adam opted to keep the news under wraps and focused on savouring the surreal experience. Despite the temptation, they managed to avoid making extravagant purchases or altering their lifestyle, and no one was wiser about their lottery winnings.
As discussions about claiming and managing the substantial winnings unfolded, her husband proposed sharing a portion with his best friend and business partner, Tim. The idea stemmed from their history of shared business ventures, investment risks and dreams of financial success. Adam believed splitting the prize with Tim and his wife and incorporating them into their LLC to claim the prize would not only ease suspicions but ensure they navigated this new chapter together.
However, the woman explains her reservations about the plan she shared with Adam, citing concerns about Tim's family's inclination towards flaunting wealth and the potential risks to their safety and privacy. She felt uneasy about Tim and his wife becoming part of their LLC, fearing it could lead to complications or an increased sense of entitlement.
As a result, the couple have found themselves at an impasse. Adam is saying that the woman is selfish for not jumping at the chance to share the wealth with Tim right away, and he believes they should be sharing their new lifestyle with his best friend. On the other hand, she is focused on ensuring their security, discretion, and financial health by keeping the wealth to themselves while being open to the idea of sharing it in the future.
To try and find a solution, the woman took to Reddit to see what everyone else thought. Is she being selfish, or is she justified in prioritising privacy and safety over immediate wealth sharing?
What Everyone Else Had to Say
It will come as no surprise that this question got a lot of people talking, and many opinions were raised. When it comes to being flashy about money, there is a clear divide between people thinking it’s okay to be proud of your money and others thinking it’s unfair to brag about your wealth. But, when the money comes unexpectedly from lottery winnings, everyone agrees that it’s more sensible to be discreet and that safety is vital. But, there is a clear divide on what people think about sharing the wealth.
Some people believe that money should be shared and enjoyed and agree that sharing the winnings with the husband’s friend is right. By doing so, everyone can enjoy the same lifestyle, and those who need financial help will receive it. However, others are of the opposite opinion and advise the woman to be careful about what she does with the money, with some even suggesting she seeks legal advice to protect the windfall from her husband.
Alarming_Reply_6286 said: “Call an attorney and a financial advisor. Keep the money out of your husband’s business.”
Waste-Phase-2857 agreed, saying: “Agree, put everything in order, what will happen to the money (or any investments coming from them) in case of divorce, death etc.”
There was evident concern amongst Redditors that the husband would ‘steal’ the money from the woman, with zippy_zaboo saying: “Get the money somewhere that your husband CANNOT decide to move it without your permission and knowledge.”
Many people supported the woman’s decision not to share the money with her husband’s friend, saying that giving such a large sum of money to someone doesn't make sense and that there are other ways to ‘treat’ him.
BeeYeeWoo commented: You should be selfish. The reasons your husband has provided for sharing the wealth are flimsy, suspicious and illogical.
Jacksonlove3 commented: “Me personally wouldn’t have an issue helping someone like his friend with some of my money, but I would not be splitting it. He didn’t split to buy the ticket.”
Equivalent_Secret_26 commented: “It's not your job to fund your husband's buddy's lifestyle. YOU won the money. Period.”
mdthomas even suggested a compromise, saying: “If you split it in half with your husband, he can split his half with his friend. You get 50%, he and his friend each get 25%.”
Though there are different opinions on how lottery winnings should be shared, there was a responding ‘NO’ to the woman being selfish for not wanting to share the money with her husband’s friend. In this case, Jacksonlove3 came out on top, believing that winnings can be used to help others, so they shouldn’t be split.
