The UK Sporting Calendar for Bettors, Season by Season

By the Go Gambling Editorial Team. Reviewed and updated June 2026.

One of the quiet pleasures of following sport in Britain is that there is almost always something big on. The calendar has a rhythm to it: rugby and racing carry the spring, summer brings tennis, flat racing and football finals, and the football season itself runs through most of the rest. For anyone who enjoys a bet, that rhythm is half the fun, there is always a marquee event around the corner to look forward to. This guide walks through the big annual fixtures, what makes each one enjoyable to bet on, and the kind of markets they open up, so you know what is coming whatever time of year you are reading this.

A note before we start: every one of these events is fun to follow, but none of them is a way to make money. The bookmaker's margin means betting costs you over time. Treat it as entertainment, set a budget, and enjoy the sport first. 18+ only. T&Cs apply.

Spring: rugby and the racing festivals

Feb to Mar

Six Nations Rugby

The annual clash between England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales is one of the spring's biggest draws. Played across several weekends from late winter into March, it gives a steady run of high-intensity matches, perfect for in-play betting. The fierce tackles and momentum swings create plenty of live markets, from first try-scorer to total points and the winning margin.

Mar

The Cheltenham Festival

Four days that are the highlight of the jumps racing season, building to the Gold Cup. Cheltenham is a betting institution, with huge ante-post markets, daily multiples and a famous opening-race roar. The sheer volume of competitive racing makes it one of the busiest betting weeks of the year.

Apr

The Grand National

Held at Aintree, the National is the race the whole country bets on, including plenty of people who never bet otherwise. Its huge field and unpredictable nature make it famous for outsiders and each-way value. It is the one fixture where a flutter is almost a national tradition.

Summer: tennis, the Derby and football finals

May

The FA Cup Final

The climax of English football's oldest competition, played at Wembley, usually in May. The final caps a season of giant-killings and brings markets on everything from the first goalscorer to corners and cards. A natural in-play event, with the drama of a one-off knockout match.

Jun

The Epsom Derby and Royal Ascot

Early summer belongs to flat racing's showpiece events. The Epsom Derby is one of the most prestigious flat races in the world, while Royal Ascot is five days of top-class racing and pageantry in mid-June. Between them they offer big-field handicaps, forecasts, accumulators and in-running betting, a racing fan's dream stretch of the calendar.

Jun to Jul

Wimbledon

The oldest and most prestigious tennis Grand Slam, played on grass in late June and early July. Tennis is superb for in-play betting because the momentum shifts constantly, point by point and set by set. Markets range from match and set winner to total games and number of aces, and the unpredictability of the early rounds is part of the appeal.

Summer

Tournament football, in the years it lands

Every couple of years the summer is dominated by a major international football tournament, the FIFA World Cup or the European Championship. These are the biggest betting events of all, with months of build-up, outright markets, group-stage permutations and a nation following every England kick. When one lands, it reshapes the whole summer.

Autumn and winter: the football grind and the jumps

Aug to May

The football season returns

From August the domestic football season is back in full swing, and for most bettors this is the backbone of the year. Week after week of Premier League and EFL fixtures means constant markets, accumulators and in-play action, with the added drama of European nights midweek.

Oct to Mar

The jumps racing season

As the flat season winds down, National Hunt racing takes over through the colder months, building towards Cheltenham and Aintree in spring. It gives racing fans a steady diet of competitive cards right through autumn and winter.

Year-round: boxing and the Premier League

All year

Big boxing nights

Boxing does not follow a fixed season, the big fights land throughout the year whenever the biggest names are matched. A marquee heavyweight bout is one of the most bet-on single events in sport, with markets on the method of victory, the round, and plenty of in-play movement as a fight unfolds. The anticipation around a genuine superfight is hard to match.

All year

Formula 1 and the Grand Prix

The F1 season runs from spring to autumn, with the British Grand Prix at Silverstone a July highlight. Race weekends bring outright, podium and head-to-head markets, plus in-play swings as strategy and weather play out.

The betting angles each sport offers

Different sports suit different kinds of bet. Here is a quick guide to what each of the big ones is known for, so you can match the event to the way you like to play.

Sport Popular markets Best for

Horse racing Win, each-way, forecast, accumulators across a card Each-way value, big fields
Tennis Match and set winner, total games, aces In-play momentum betting
Rugby Match result, handicap, first try-scorer, total points In-play, handicaps
